In 1875 when the postage rate to Great Britain was reduced, Canada had no 5-cent stamp to prepay the new rate. However, in 1868 when the first stamps for the Dominion of Canada were introduced, the security printers had prepared a die for the 5-cent denomination in the large format. As a temporary means of securing 5-cent stamps the Post Office Department authorized the printers to manufacture temporary stamps from this design.
