Considering Canada's vastness, it is not surprising that we are a leader in communications and that many innovations in the field were developed in this country. On 30 October 1869, in Montreal, Georges-Édouard Desbarats and William Leggo for the first time published a photograph using half-tone engraving. This new technology made it much easier and cheaper to reproduce pictures by mechanically reproducing them to a screen of fine dots. For this second set of stamps in the Science and Technology series, designer Roger Hill of Toronto linked four very different kinds of innovations in communications by focusing on portraits of the inventors. The context of each innovation is shown in drawings and illustrations surrounding these portraits.
