A new 36¢ stamp issue features a profile of Queen Elizabeth II. Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of Windsor was born on 21 April 1926. As the royal family's oldest child, she succeeded to the throne on the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952. Steel engraving, the traditional printing technique, has been combined with photogravure in the design of a new engraved version of the stamp bearing the Queen's portrait. Robert Couture of Ottawa engraved the portrait of Her Majesty after a bas-relief by Jaroslav Huta, a Toronto sculptor and medal maker. Raymond Bellemare of Montreal designed the stamp.
