About Stamp

The final set of Calgary Olympic Winter Games stamps appears on the eve of the Games themselves. The stamps feature alpine skiing, figure skating, luge and curling. In the first three, Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded; the fourth, curling, will be a demonstration sport, which competitors will show to the entire world via television. Together, these four sports epitomize the speed, grace and precision so characteristic of winter sports, and prove that, at their best, sports appeal not only to the senses but to the mind as well. The final four stamp designs focus on single figures - a curler, a figure skater, a slalom skier pivoting around a flag and a luge contestant hurtling down the course. These stamps, and the entire 11-stamp set dedicated to the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, were designed by Pierre-Yves Pelletier of Montreal. The images featured were created using a unique diagonal half-tone dot screen on photographs of athletes in action. The screen was specially designed by Mr. Pelletier for the stamp series.
