About Stamp

Canada Post Corporation is proud to present a new series featuring masterpieces of Canadian art. Researched in consultation with prominent art scholars, the series will depict a surprising, forceful and diverse array of works of art from across the country. To produce stamps worthy of these masterpieces, Canada Post has chosen, for the first stamp in the series, the most exacting of traditional stamp-printing processes, steel engraving, in combination with photogravure. Ozias Leduc, the "Sage of St. Hilaire", produced "The Young Reader" in 1894. The work shows the artist's younger brother, pencil in hand, concentrating on a picture book. The dignity, humility and simple humanity of the scene give the painting that spiritual quality so often found in great art. The "Young Reader" is part of the National Gallery of Canada Collection. Pierre-Yves Pelletier has designed a special stamp format that respects the atmosphere of serenity and reflection prevalent throughout Leduc's work. Pelletier's classic, unobtrusive graphic format will be repeated each year in a special miniature sheet format of 16 stamps featuring different masterpiece of Canadian art.
