The hidden date for this stamp can be found on the rockface underneath the dog.
Dogs are affectionately known as "man's best friend". Ask any dog lover, particularly members of the Canadian Kennel Club, which is celebrating its centennial this year. In recognition of this milestone, these stamps feature four dogs breeds native to Canada. Because of their good temperments and fine skills, these breeds may be working dogs or pets. Tahltan Indians raised this breed to hunt bear and lynx, quite a featfor so small dog. Though a bold hunter, it was so gentle with humans that it was allowed to live in the family tent. Unfortunately, this breed is believed to be extinct. The illustrations appearing on these four stamps are the work of Mia Lane of Bath, Ontario. Lane is both a dog breeder and an accomplished artist. Each dog is shown in a setting typical of its place of origin in Canada. David Nethercott of Ottawa provided the layout and typography for the stamps.
