Three new-rate medium-value definitives featuring large mammals indigenous to Canada were issued on December 28, 1990. As the last set in a series which was begun in 1987, these three stamps bring the total number in the series to 19 different stamps, not including some paper and perforation varieties. The 46-cent U.S.-rate value features the solitary wolverine (Gulo gulo), whose habitat is primarily the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and parts of British Columbia. As the largest member of the weasel family, it resembles a small bear with its stout, long-haired, muscular body. Noted for its bad disposition, strength, cunning, fearlessness and voracity, the wolverine tends to be more of a scavenger than a hunter, consuming all manner of animals and berries. The stamps in this series were all designed by Brian Tsang of Toronto. All three designs are available in panes of 50 stamps, while the 46-cent and 80-cent denomination are also available in handy packs of five stamps.
