About Stamp

On August 20, 1991, five se-tenant stamps will be issued in a Stamp Pack of 10 to recognize the importance of five great Canadian rivers. This is the first in a series to follow. The Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) was established on January 18, 1984, by the parks agencies of federal, provincial and territorial governments to give national recognition to the important rivers of Canada and to conserve and interpret the best examples of this heritage. These stamps represent just five of the 19 rivers spanning 4,114 kilometers currently included in the CHRS. Situated on the Great Northern Peninsula on one of the few remaining near-wilderness areas of Newfoundland, the 57 km Main River flows from the Long Range Mountains into White Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. Its scenic environment is known for the great beauty and serenity of Paradise Pool and Big Steady, marshy areas which provide a home to myriad species of birds and plants, including sizeable populations of moose and caribou. The stamps were designed by Eskind Waddell. Stamp packs sold through the National Philatelic Centre and philatelic centres will be available with unglued covers white those at regular postal outlets will be in the normal Stamp Pack format.
