In conjunction with an international convention of fire chiefs being held in Toronto, four stamps will be issued on September 23, 1991 to draw public focus on four Canada's Dangerous Public Service Occupations: fire-fighting; police; search and rescue; and the ski patrol. When people around the world think of Canada, one of the first thoughts that comes to mind is the scarlet serge of Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This country has a proud history of heroic policing which continues to this day. Organized police forces, which replaced the military and unpaid constables, did not emerge until the 1830's. These were modelled after the London Metropolitan Police, established by Sir Robert Peel in 1829. In 1873 the North-West Mounted Police were founded on yet another British model, the centralized and more militaristic Royal Irish Constabulary. This force became the RCMP in 1919. Police officers today are highly trained professionals who must not only enforce the law but maintain civil liberties.
