Royal portraits have been favourite stamp designs since the world's first adhesive postage stamp was issued by Great Britain on May 6, 1840 - the famous Penny Black, featuring a youthful portrait of Queen Victoria. To correspond with new postal rates effective January 1, 1992, a 42-cent definitive stamp depicting the familiar portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by internationally-renowned Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh was issued on December 27, 1991. The portrait was first seen on a 37-cent stamp issued December 30, 1987. The background of this year's issue is a rich purple. The 42-cent Queen definitive is available in panes of 100 stamps and in packs of 10 stamps. A new feature this year is that not only the stamp panes but the stamp packs as well are available in two formats: inscripted for philatelic sale and non-inscripted for normal postal outlet sales. The applies to all stamp packs and booklets. It was designed by Yousuf Karsh, Tom Yakobina and Chris Candlish, and printed by Ashton-Potter Limited of Toronto.
