During her 41 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II has seen the role of the monarchy change with the times. As both Head of the Commonwealth and Head of State of several sovereign nations, it became imperative for the monarch to be seen in person by her millions of subjects around the world. Canada has been especially favoured with the Queen having visited numerous times travelling from coast to coast. Her first visit as monarch was in October 1957, when she opened a new session of the Canadian Parliament. Her most recent visit occurred in 1992, when she was present at ceremonies on Parliament Hill to mark the 125th anniversary of Confederation. As the Queen said during one of her visits: "The Crown is an idea more than a person, and I want the Crown to represent everything that is best and most admired in the Canadian ideal. I will continue to do my best during to give me your help in this task."
