About Stamp

Canadian history is punctuated by influential politicians who changed the course of this country - those who fought to introduce social programs, reform discriminatory legislation and strengthen the economy of the provinces. This February, Canada Post will pay tribute to 10 such figures - those from across the country who made their mark and helped build our provinces.

John Walter Jones

Known as "Farmer" Jones and born in Pownal, PEI, John Walter Jones was Prince Edward Island's third longest serving Premier. In 1935, Jones won election to the provincial legislature as a Liberal. He became Premier in 1943, and reigned for a decade. In 1953 Jones was appointed to the Senate. He died in Ottawa the following year. According to political scientist Wayne MacKinnon, Jones was an active proponent of many causes. He expanded agricultural services, established a forestry program, opened a home for senior citizens and a vocational school, initiated rural electrification, expanded fisheries programs, and strengthened education, health care and social services.
