Just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Newfoundland's entry into Confederation is the third and final set of Scenic Highways, commemorating Newfoundland's Discovery Trail, Route 132 in Quebec, Manitoba's Yellowhead Highway, and the Northwest Territories' Dempster Highway. In a nation spanning nearly 10 million square kilometres, Canada's often-long highways provide a rich diversity of landscapes and some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.
The Yukon portion of the Dempster Highway appeared on a 1998 Scenic Highways stamp. The highway now reappears showing the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories (Route 8). The Dempster route actually crosses the Arctic Circle and ends at Inuvik, making it the most northern public highway on this continent.
As in previous years, the 1999 stamps incorporate panoramic photographs of the highways with signs designating the route. Close-cropped images depict the local culture, history or a popular activity in the area.
