Just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Newfoundland's entry into Confederation is the third and final set of Scenic Highways, commemorating Newfoundland's Discovery Trail, Route 132 in Quebec, Manitoba's Yellowhead Highway, and the Northwest Territories' Dempster Highway. In a nation spanning nearly 10 million square kilometres, Canada's often-long highways provide a rich diversity of landscapes and some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.
The Bonavista section of Newfoundland's discovery trail (Route 230) hugs the rugged Atlantic coast as it winds through quaint fishing villages, offering sightings of whales, icebergs and the spot believed to be the landing site of John Cabot. The stamp features the route as seen at English Harbour.
As in previous years, the 1999 stamps incorporate panoramic photographs of the highways with signs designating the route. Close-cropped images depict the local culture, history or a popular activity in the area.
