Just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Newfoundland's entry into Confederation is the third and final set of Scenic Highways, commemorating Newfoundland's Discovery Trail, Route 132 in Quebec, Manitoba's Yellowhead Highway, and the Northwest Territories' Dempster Highway. In a nation spanning nearly 10 million square kilometres, Canada's often-long highways provide a rich diversity of landscapes and some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.
With a name meaning "land's end" in Mikmaq, Quebec's Gaspé region is home to North America's largest gannet colony and many other bird species. While John Cabot's landing is associated with the Discovery Trail, Jacques Cartier's arrival in 1534 was on the Gaspé. Cartier erected a 30-foot wooden cross on the shore of Gaspé Bay: a commemorative granite cross stands there today. The Gaspé stamp shows Route 132 overlooking Percé Rock.
As in previous years, the 1999 stamps incorporate panoramic photographs of the highways with signs designating the route. Close-cropped images depict the local culture, history or a popular activity in the area.
