Just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Newfoundland's entry into Confederation is the third and final set of Scenic Highways, commemorating Newfoundland's Discovery Trail, Route 132 in Quebec, Manitoba's Yellowhead Highway, and the Northwest Territories' Dempster Highway. In a nation spanning nearly 10 million square kilometres, Canada's often-long highways provide a rich diversity of landscapes and some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.
In sharp contrast, the Yellowhead Highway (Route 16) runs by gently rolling hills and wide riverbeds as it passes from Manitoba to the Rocky Mountains. It grew up along the Canadian-Pacific Railway line that linked rural communities to one another across the Prairie frontier. A section of the Highway located 100 miles west of Winnipeg is depicted on the stamp.
As in previous years, the 1999 stamps incorporate panoramic photographs of the highways with signs designating the route. Close-cropped images depict the local culture, history or a popular activity in the area.
