This spring, from April 27 to May 2, Canada will host its first-ever World Orchid Conference at Vancouver's. Trade and Convention Centre. Occurring every three years since 1954, the WOC brings together thousands of orchid hobbyists, growers and scientists. This year's theme is conservation-protecting the genetic diversity of flora and fauna in a sustainable environment.
Canada Post will celebrate this floral forum with a unique set of Orchid stamp issues. The second-largest family of flowering plants, orchids are found in a wide range of habitats around the world. All of Canada's orchids are terrestrial-that is, they grow on the ground. Prized for their spectacular flowers, orchids are collected and hybridized by growers internationally.
Four wild Canadian orchids with varying colours and bloom formations are featured in this floral stamp set. Two stamps feature the expressive style of Chinese brush painting contributed by Poon-Kuen Chow; the others showcase the more detailed brush-painting technique of Yukman Lai.
The Plantanthera psycodes grows in open habitats such as pastures, thickets and swamps. Within Canada, this species appears in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and Newfoundland. This flower, in which butterflies and moths can be observed pollinating, is also commonly called the 'butterfly orchid'. Its flower clusters are a vibrant lilac-purple.
Creating a delightful contrast, the four-stamp set, available in a booklet format, presents four wild Canadian orchids using two different modes of Chinese brush painting - the "expressive" and the "detailed".
