This stamp has "Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park (SK)" microprinted along the top of the sand dune.
Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park is home to the largest active sand surface in Canada and hosts a unique ecosystem that supports several species of rare, endemic plants. The dunes, which can rise as high as 30 metres, are believed to have been formed 8,000 to 9,000 years ago and are the most northern on Earth.
There are so many beautiful places to see across Canada, it’s a constant temptation to pack your bags, hit the road and explore this fabulous country from one end to the other. If that’s not practical, this new definitive stamp series – From Far and Wide – promises to satisfy even the most restless of armchair travelers and inspire all of us to see more of this land first-hand.
According to stamp designer Stéphane Huot, it’s a privilege to work on a stamp series over an extended period of time. He adds, “The challenge is to establish a design platform that can be repeated, but that can also evolve. In the ‘From Far and Wide’ series, the evolution is the result of the images chosen for the background of the souvenir sheet and a strong and distinctive color scheme that establishes the tone for the series. Beauty is found in the series’ continuity, while a fresh colour palate and eye-popping new images make each issue visually unique."
