Most wild animals usually try to avoid being seen by humans, and may be difficult to sight because of nocturnal habits. But with a little practice, interested observers can learn to recognize signs of their presence. The varying hare becomes active at dusk. Although it blends in well with an arctic environment because it turns white in winter, you may track one by its distinctive pawprints. Its toes spread to form the shape of a snowshoe. Gottschalk + Ash International in Toronto designed these new low-value definitive stamps. The graphic style depicts these small mammals on a split, textured background suggestive of the animals' environment. The colours on the stamps were chosen to be realistic, and yet to allow each stamp to be easily distinguishable.
