About Stamp

To correspond with postal rate increases effective January 1, 1991 a number of new stamps were issued on December 28, 1990. A 40-cent definitive depicting the familiar portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by internationally-renowned Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh is one of five new first class rate stamps. Originally issued as a 37-cent value on December 30, 1987, this year a rich amber tone highlights the background. Her Majesty has appeared on all first class rate definitive stamps since May 1, 1953 following Her ascension to the throne on February 6, 1952. This first Canadian definitive stamp portrait was also the work of Karsh of Ottawa. The 40-cent Queen definitive is available in panes of 100 stamps and in stamp packs of 10. It was designed by Yousuf Karsh, Tom Yakobina and Chris Candlish and printed by Ashton-Potter Limited of Toronto.
