The second set in a series of Canadian Folklore stamps will be issued on October 1, 1991 featuring folktales. These four colourful and entertaining stamps will launch October as Stamp Month in Canada. An Indian word meaning "snow eater" a Chinook is a warm dry wind which sweeps down the eastern Rockies, raising the temperature by 20oC or more, melting snow as if by magic. A typical Chinook tale tells of how, one Sunday, while travelling by sleigh to Calgary, a resident of Morley, Alberta tried to outrun an oncoming Chinook. On arrival he was treated for frostbite, while his rear passenger had sunstroke. Back in Morley, with no snow the horses were left dangling from the steeple. Designer Ralph Tibbles teamed up with illustrators Allan Cormack and Deborah Drew-Brook to create this year's Folktales stamps, as well as last year's Legendary Creatures stamps.
