What do Superman, Nelvana of the Northern Lights, Johnny Canuck, Captain Canuck and Fleur de Lys have in common? For one thing, they're all super heroes sprung from the wondrous pages of comic book; and for another, they're all the marvelous creations of Canadian talent. On October 2, these five super heroes will find new adventure in a booklet of 10 stamps from Canada Post Corporation, to be issued in conjunction with Stamp Month 1995. In 1985, Montreal writer Mark Shainblum created Fleur de Lys. As told in New Triumph No. 3, martial arts expert Manon Deschamps adopted the costumed identity of Fleur de Lys to help Phillip Wise (a.k.a. Northguard) fight crime and political intrigue in Canada. Her super hero uniform, designed by co-creator and Montreal artist Gabriel Morrissette, is blue and white, with one fleur de lys on her forehead and two more on her body. Fleur de Lys and Northguard strove to prevent a threatened takeover of Canada by a right-wing evangelical group. While the first issue began an eight-part adventure in 1984, the saga of Fleur de Lys and Northguard was not completed until 1989-1990. From Krypton to the Arctic, to Second World War battlefields and the Montreal Forum, Canada's super heroes have fought our country's enemies and never failed. And in delighting readers for some 50 years, they have given the world uniquely Canadian heroes.
