In 2002, Université Laval celebrates the 150th anniversary of the issue of its charter, an event marked by Canada Post with a single domestic rate commemorative stamp.
Origins and history
In 1663, Msgr. François de Montmorency Laval founded the Séminaire de Québec. In 1852, priests from that institution founded Université Laval - which was granted a charter by Queen Victoria later that year, making it the first North American institution to offer post-secondary education in French.
Laval today
Today, Université Laval has a student population of more than 35,000 and offers over 350 programs. The institution remains at the forefront of the internationalization of teaching and research.
An esteemed design
The Laval stamp is one in a series featuring universities; each stamp showing a significant building from the campus, the university seal, and a vignette of an activity. Designed by Semaphor Design Company Inc. of Halifax, the stamp features the Pavillon Louis-Jacques-Casault, with a vignette of students conducting research at the Pavillon de l'Hôtel-Dieu de Québec Research Centre.
