Printed by the rotary process in purple, electric-eye perforated, and issued in sheets of 50.
This stamp was issued to commemorate the one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn.
The stamp is 0.84 by 1.44 inches in dimension, arranged horizontally with a double-line frame, printed by the rotary process in purple, electric-eye perforated and issued in sheets of 50.
The central design of the stamp depicts the evacuation of General Washington's troops from Brooklyn at the site of the Fulton Ferry house. Dominating the left central part of the scene, General Washington is shown mounted on his white charger, directing his troops. A part of the Fulton Ferry house is shown on the right, and in the distant center troops already embarked are seen effecting the crossing of the East River. Across the top appears "United States Postage" in white face Roman. Incorporated and arranged vertically in ornamental scrolls on each side of the stamp appear the numerals "1776" and "1951," respectively. Arranged in two lines in dark Gothic, on a ribbon, centered at the bottom of the stamp is the wording "Washington Saves His Army at Brooklyn." Arranged in each lower corner, an ornamental shield provides the frame for the denomination "3¢."
This stamp was first placed on sale at Brooklyn, N.Y., on December 10, 1951.
