About Stamp

A 4-cent stamp pointing to the role higher education had played in the cultural and industrial development of the United States was first placed on sale at the Washington, D.C., post office, on November 14, 1962. This stamp came as part of the centennial observance of the law creating land-grant colleges and universities and was issued to coincide with the annual meeting of The Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.

Design portrays the traditional "lamp of learning" against a bas-relief map of the United States. The arrangement of the colors will require two passes through the Giori presses, resulting in two plate numbers on each pane.
