Cordell Hull was Secretary of State from 1933 until 1944 when he resigned because of ill health, having served in that position longer than any other person. For his groundwork on behalf of post‑war organization he became known as the "father of the United Nations." In 1945 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
