This stamp honors John James Audubon and features his outstanding hand-colored engraving entitled "Columbia Jay". Originally scheduled for issuance on November 29, 1963, in Henderson, Kentucky, the release was postponed due to the death of President John F. Kennedy. The new issue date was set for December 7, 1963, in Henderson, with availability at all post offices beginning December 8. The original print from which the stamp was reproduced hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
