This 5-cent stamp portrays Sam Houston, hero of Texas independence, and was designed by Tom Lea, a famous Texas artist. It is based on an 1848 lithograph by F. Davignon, with Lea depicting Houston a few years younger, as he appeared when he was the first President of the Republic of Texas. Originally scheduled for release on December 13, 1963, in Houston, Texas, the stamp's issue was postponed and rescheduled for January 10, 1964, with nationwide availability beginning January 11.
