The 5-cent stamp honoring the Mayo Brothers was first placed on sale through the Rochester, Minn., post office, on September 11, 1964.
This stamp was based on statues of Dr. William J. Mayo and his brother, Dr. Charles H. Mayo, in surgical gowns. It was printed in green, the symbolic color of medicine. Another symbol of healing, the staff of Aesculapius, appears in the lower left of the stamp.
