The 5-cent Verrazano-Narrows Bridge commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at Staten Island, N.Y., on November 21, 1964, in conjunction with the opening of the world's longest suspension bridge.
The bridge honors Giovanni da Verrazano, the Italian explorer who discovered the New York Bay in 1524. It will connect Staten Island and Brooklyn, and will serve as a link between New England and the southeast section of the United States.
