The Department issued a 5‑cent United States postage stamp honoring Sir Winston Churchill through the Fulton, Missouri, post office on May 13, 1965. It was on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton that Churchill made his famous "iron curtain" speech in 1946.
The design is based on the famous "Angry Lion" photograph by Yousuf Karsh of Ottawa, Canada.
Initially, 112,000,000 were printed by the Department, but in response to continuing demand for the 5-cent Winston Churchill commemorative postage stamp, printing of an additional 10 million stamps was authorized.
