The Department issued a 5-cent stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Fulton on August 19, 1965, at Clermont, N.Y., where the inventor resided. In 1807 Fulton's steamship "The Clermont" made an historic voyage up the Hudson from New York City to Albany to become the first commercially successful steamship.
Reproduced on the stamp is a bust of Fulton sculptured by Jean Antoine Houdon, and a drawing of "The Clermont" done in crude linework to simulate wood engraving.
