The 5-cent Christmas postage stamp was first placed on sale at Christmas, Michigan, on November 1, 1966.
The design is based on a painting by Hans Memling, Flemish master of the Renaissance. This oil painting, Madonna and Child with Angels, hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. The Madonna's gown and portions of the tapestry will be printed blue by lithography. A second offset plate will apply orange to the tapestry, blending with the blue to produce green. Some portions of the tapestry will be orange. The stamp then will move to the Giori press where deep brown, light brown, and red will be printed.
